Public defenders are very good attorneys. They’re very experienced, but they’re all very overloaded.
They’re in court almost every single day. For example, if you’re an inmate, you can possibly talk to your attorney over the phone, but a lot of times, they’re in court and they don’t have a lot of time to get out to the jail. They’re not going to be able to talk the time to call you and talk to you about your case. They’re not going to be able to take the time to sit in the office and talk to you. They’re not going to be able to talk to your family members. The benefit of hiring private counsel over the public defender is private counsel has more time to care about and to listen to your case and to take care of you.
Public defenders are very good attorneys for the most part – they just don’t have time.
